A first for ICF

A spoonie with a school name

The spoon-billed sandpiper, or “spoonie”, is one of the world’s most threatened shorebirds. It breeds in the Russian Far East and winters in South and Southeast Asia, and our field partners work along its flyway to keep it from disappearing.

This autumn, the 152nd School in Marchaevo became the first school to adopt a spoonie. The adoption certificate now carries the school’s name and the Spoonie is called Lajichko (tiny spoon in Bulgarian) .

Meeting the spoonie

Aleks, ICF’s communications lead, visited the school to introduce the children to the spoonie: where it lives, the long journey it makes each year, and why it needs protecting. The pupils were curious and full of questions from start to finish.

Spoonies, painted by the children

After the presentation, the pupils painted their own spoonies, inspired by the bird art of Hungarian wildlife illustrator Szabolcs Kókay.

Bring the spoonie to your school

Marchaevo is the first of many schools. Children care deeply about conservation when they get the chance to learn about it, and the spoonie is a small bird that is easy to love and urgent to save.
